Re: [GSAS-board] January Speaker

Hi,

My sis stayed at the NEXUS by Northgate mall, I think it was a mere $100 a night vs the 200 plus of downtown. However with winter rates this might be better!

I am happy to pick them up Tuesday night, go to dinner, and deposit after

Hey Paul,

My formal title is "Senior Aquarium Biologist". I think my partner and I
can probably figure out somewhere to stay; we're going to try to make it a
sort of fun weekend getaway thing while we're at it. Of course, if you have
any recommendations for great hotels I'm happy to hear them!

Thanks,
Jen

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for the update. I will reimburse for the train and send out
feelers for hosts and potential places to stay. Do you have a formal title?
Steev would like to post the newsletter and I need to send the update to the
web site.

Hi Paul,

I think my plan will be to travel down on the weekend with my boyfriend, via
train- the train will be only around $85 or so, so it's pretty economical.
We'll book a hotel and will probably come down Sunday and leave Wednesday.
Do any of you folks get together before your meeting on Tuesday to have
dinner or anything? Would be great to connect with some fellow fish geeks
outside of just doing the talk.

Cheers,
Jen

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for the invitation. I'm really looking forward to this!
I may even have to come down and see Ad's talk in May- could you please add
me to your Aquarium club mailing list so I can get updates about the talks?

As for travel/lodging, etc, I'd gladly accept any funds to help with that
side of things. I would definitely enjoy the opportunity to be hosted by a
club member, but before I take you up on that, I'll touch base with a couple
of friends here in Vancouver who may be interested in accompanying me to
Seattle- that way I'd be able to share costs on somewhere to stay.

I'll also plan on bringing down some Vancouver Aquarium pamphlets and
admission passes, etc, and would be happy to give a little spiel on why
folks should come visit us up here- and perhaps Phil would also like to
throw in his two cents on that side of things!

Cheers,
Jen

Dear Jennifer,

On behalf of the GSAS board I would like to invite you to speak in Seattle
at the January program. This season we are hosting a bit of cichlid frenzy
with several talks on the topic and your videos and 'life in the lake'
sounds great! I would also like to hear a little about the Vancouver
Aquarium as it is still a personal favorite for me.

We have a small travel budget if you accept to pay travel, dinner, and
lodging. We have several club members that regularly host speakers if you
would like.

Thanks!
-Paul

As you connected with Jennifer, you are the host and have the pleasure of
the introduction if you would like. I would be more than happy to manage
the details related to travel on this one.

Any objections?

Dear Phil,

Thank you! Jennifer sounds like the perfect speaker and in light of
all
the
cichlid frenzy this season I would still like to invite her. I am
working with Kathy to get the details of Ad and Wayne but my
impression is that
the
talks are widely different and personal and just happen to take place
in
the
same part of the world. I have a letter drafted below to flesh out
the details but would like to check with you and the board prior to
sending it...

"Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for hosting Phil at the big Vancouver auction as he has
since
done
everything in his power to make use feel guilty for not going. At the
last
board meeting we also realized that we were short a January speaker
and
Phil
volunteered to find an INTERNATIONAL speaker. The club is more than
happy to host you with an allowance for travel and lodging.

For this year, our dear friend Kathy Olson has already committed two
cichlid
speakers.

* Local member Jeff Schulstrom in March for 1/2 talk on importing to
share with home show (not confirmed)
* Ad Konings in May whom likes Lake Tanganyika Sand dwellers
* Wayne Leibold in June on is also a cichlid guy but will likely talk
specialization
* (Plant auction in Feb and general in April)

I appreciate your willingness to speak on short notice in January and
your topic sounds awesome. Our only concern is that the cichlid talks
are
every
other month. While I think this is great (I ended up with an Mbuna
tank after the last talk and have been told 'Mbuna are the gate way to
Tanganyikans'), the concern is to provide details (or nudges) to those
in the club that are not yet keeners. I will be nailing down the
topics for Jeff, Ad, and Wayne in the next few days and value your input.

Hi again Phil,

Let me know what the gang thinks. To be honest, I would rather do my
Tanganyika presentation just because it's already all prepped, I've
had a few chances to practice it so far, and I'm eager to share what
I
experienced
with other keeners- I know if I weren't already me, I'd love to see
this
talk- it even has underwater video. My favourite is of cooperative
hunting
behaviour between mastacembelid eels and predatory cichlids!

The other factor of course is time to make a new presentation- kind
of lacking on that front right now, and with the holidays coming up,
it's
sure
to get worse. Now, I could easily do a really short blurb about the
Aquarium either before or after that- I think I can do a good job of
talking
the place up and I could bring down some pamphlets, possibly even
raffle
off
some more admission passes/etc if I can get my paws on some...

Cheers,

Jen

Hey there! I'll be more than happy to pass this along to Those Who
Decide
on our board, and personally I would love to hear more about cichlids
-
we
had Lawrence Kent do an utterly amazing talk on his West African
adventures
int he spring, and I even won some of the fish he hand-carried back
on
the
plane. Yeah, I know!!! :-)

However, I have a feeling we might be a tiny bit cichlid-ed out, as
the question arose at our board meet on Tuesday that someone might
want to
come
down and discuss the Vanc Aquarium and what you do there/why it's an
awesome
aquarium to visit. I thought it was particularly cool that we got to
visit
an aquarium in a country that borders a vast portion of the Arctic,
not a perspective we often get down here :-) Maybe combine the two
somehow?

Like I said, this evening I'll pass this along and we'll see what we
can
do!

THanks so much! - Phil

Jennifer Reynolds writes:

Hi Phil,

Dave passed on a message to me that you are looking for speakers for
January. I've done a talk on my cichlid work in Lake Tanganyika last
year
a
few times now that has been pretty well received. It's especially
good
for
cichlid geeks, but I also include some stuff for travellers, catfish
and
eel
folks, and scuba divers- lots of underwater photography in it, too.
Attached is a little blurb/poster type thing with a couple of images
and
a
write up about my work. Let me know if you're interested- would be a
good
opportunity for me to come down to Seattle. I also know there are
lots
of
folks in the Seattle club who are way more into Africans than there
are
here- so it would be awesome to talk to them about it. I saw Ad
Koning's talk on Lake Malawi down in Seattle about 5-6 years ago or so.

The only potential issue is I may be going to Brazil in late January
for some work with the World Fisheries Trust and a new aquarium in
Belo Horizonte. That hasn't yet been confirmed, however- and the
dates were definitely leaning more toward the end of the month. I
*think* it is a
safe
bet that I can do Jan 12, but just wanted to let you know that there
could
be complications.

Let me know what you think!

Cheers, and thanks again for your terrific auctioneering.
