Re: [GSAS-board] Speakers for 2010

I made the same comment back when the talks were being organized. I've made my peace with it.

It's only 2.5 talks (three if you count Wayne's as a cichlid talk). It happens. Four years ago we ran 2-3 talks back-to-back that all turned out to be collecting livebearers in Mexico. We didn't have any cichlid talks in 2009, but we did have two plant talks.

I do still think it's a mistake to run the home show AND jeff on the same night, unless he's talking for 10 minutes. It's OK to have a meeting in which the presentations run for less than an hour and a half!

Dear Shango,

I agree that we are quite heavy on the Africans but the good news is that we have
recovered 1/2 airfare through the ACA for Wayne. Jennifer was a
âlast momentâ invite and she has the one talk ready. Ad has given a number of
talks over the years but wants to do sand dwellers here.

Â

I could use some help making the posting more inclusive to or members. Any
ideas?

Wow, an entire year of almost all Cichld talks. ÂDid this happen accidentally
or has the Board decided that this is a good way for the Club to go?
ÂI know we have a fair amount of Cichlid fans in the club but this seems out of
proportion. ÂI, for one, have little interest in Cichlids and
think that having 4 of 6 speakers talking about Cichlids is too much. ÂI would
expect members would find themselves burned out on the topic, a
good amount of overlap and some exclusion of other just as valuable and
interesting topics.

Â

If the Board has determined that the Club is best served by this focus, I will back
off. ÂI just wanted to make sure this choice was being made
intentionally.

Dear Board,

Â

I would like to post a schedule to the members list but in light of the flub for
Jennifer I would like to post to the board first. Please suggest
corrections or correct any guesses (like the auction on the 17th).

Â

âHappy New Year!

Â

I am proud to announce that we are booked for most of 2010. The good news is
that a number of speakers will be giving multiple views and
perspectives of one particular geography. This includes film travel logs with
video, information of importation, a study of
speciation/hybridization in a divers closed system and sand dwellers. It just
so happens that this magical place is the African Rift lakes and
Lake Tanganyika in particular. For the cichlidphiles, this is a great lineup
and we have asked the speakers to focus on aspects that are
interesting to all members. For example Jennifer will show video of
cooperative hunting behavior between mastacembelid eels and predatory
cichlids!

Â

Â

January 12th, 2010:Â Our new friends in the Vancouver BC club are sending
Jennifer Reynolds to talk about her time in Lake Tanganyika and her
contribution to the Vancouver Aquariumâs new Lake Tanganyika exhibit.

Â

February 9th, 2010: The Plant Auction! ÂFollow signs are we may move across the
street to a bigger space for the auctions.

Â

March 9th, 2010: A show in two parts with the Homeshow and our own Jeff talking
about importing cichlids

Â

April 17th, 2010: The General Auction on a Saturday!Â

Â

May 11th, 2009: Ad Konings on Tanganyika sand dwellers.

Â

June 8th, 2009: Wayne Leibel on speciation/hybridization.

Â

Â

September, October and November are filling up fast! Tom is inviting a rainbow
fish speaker and we have soon for at least one club member to give
a full or 1/2 talk.
