Hi Paul, Shango, Erik, Clay, Matt, et al! Yes we are extraordinarily heavy on cichlids for the next several meetings and it was discussed at the Board Meeting(s). In fact, I expressed at one of our Board Meetings my concerns about the emphasis our talk schedule for the rest of the year centering on one aspect of the hobby and it was quite thoroughly discussed. Unfortunately some of our other choices, such as Tom Barr for planted aquariums and other noted speakers on other subjects were not available when we needed them. "Wrangling" quality speakers, especially from out of town, to talk on a Tuesday night in Seattle is not as easy as some might think. That being said, am I happy with our upcoming lineup? No, but I can live with it and except it and look forward to learning more about an area of the hobby that I don't currently know a lot about. The Board has put together a list of proposed topics for our 2010-2011 season that much more "balanced" to meet the diverse spectrum of interests of all our members will be better met. Hopefully we will not end up with an "overload" in one topic area in the future. I too agree that speakers should be asked to limit their talks to about 45 minutes, certainly no more than an hour. I've made my peace with it. It's only 2.5 talks (three if you count Wayne's as a cichlid talk). It happens. Four years ago we ran 2-3 talks back-to-back that all turned out to be collecting livebearers in Mexico. We didn't have any cichlid talks in 2009, but we did have two plant talks. I do still think it's a mistake to run the home show AND jeff on the same night, unless he's talking for 10 minutes. It's OK to have a meeting in which the presentations run for less than an hour and a half! - Erik On Mon, 4 Jan 2010, Paul M.
