I've done this and it seemed to work ok. I did use a large sponge as a
prefilter after the overflow, but before the canister filter.

I was thinking about buying a commercial skimmer/overflow box and run it
straight down to my Fluval 404 canister filter. Any thoughts or speculation
as to the outcome?
