Re: Micro organism

I think I have same or similar lint like organism. I asked for a microscope for XMas so maybe I will ID it :) What I have rests on the bottom and looks like a drift of pollen but when lights come on it is photoattracted and moves up to the surface, congregates at the rim of the tank. It is acid green. My vision is pretty bad but I can see it at all so I guess that means it's a "huge" microorganism. Maybe the "greater puget sound lint". I thought it was pollen when I brought the tank in as there appeared to be pollen all over the deck and everywhere else near the tank, but now I think they were at the surface and a wind whipped them off the surface of the water. Once I got the tank inside and warmed up I saw them moving in swarms, they are not as plentiful now but the Heterandria formosa are well fed and they have not totally died out. I have added it to newly hatched killifish fry's containers and they go after it but spit it out. I can bring some to the NW killies meeting to give to anyone who will be there and wants to investigate... Whatever it is it survived being under ice for several days when the tank froze while I was out of town. Susan and I both noticed them at the same time in tanks that had been outside. My other idea is that it is an invasion of body snatching aliens that due to a gross miscalculation of scale will be highly ineffective at destroying humanity.

Wish I had that microscope...

I think I might be coming down with the flu, so I will spare you all from
that exposure. It doesn't seem very serious, but then I have a very
impressive immune system, so you never know- maybe it's something really
nasty. Regardless, I won't be there tonight. And this isn't just an excuse
to get out of trying to identify some kind of aquarium lint. Far from it! I
love looking at lint of all kinds and have an autographed copy of Axelrod's
"Lints of the World" which I have pretty much memorized. If there is some
extra lint (or if Clay brings that stuff he was going on about) maybe Bob
Holmes could save me a piece for later.

Also: If Dave says it's a turbellarian, I say it's an oligochaete- and
vice-versa.
