I just felt so bad for the guy, he couldn't edit his way out of a paperback-I mean bag-and had too much ego to assign that to someone with sense. Guess that leaves the possibility that TFH in the new owners' hands may actually put out some good quality material with modern photographs? Or are they going to dump it back on him? Personally I would like to see more fish books going to the libraries and public that have sensible modern advice in them, rather than what I have usually seen. Many books still on the shelves say things like "buy all your fish on the same day so they can work out their territorial disputes. Fish can be added as soon as the tank is filled and up to temperature" and other bunk. Also enjoy the pictures printed in the negative colors, mislabeled, upside down or backwards, and in one book I saw there was a page of probably about 20 small pictures, one picture was repeated 3 TIMES on the same page! It wasn't like they were far apart or anything, either. My vision is aweful and I spotted it in a second. Also the tendency to use old outdated paragraphs from books first written in the 50's and the photos... you should see the photos in the bird books. Did you know parrots are brown rather than green and like to kiss women with lots of makeup and beehive hair do's? They also can live in cages only slightly larger than their actual body dimensions!
I have no doubt that half our club could outwrite this guy if we had access to his contacts, that is if his quotes are legit.
I really enjoyed the third article most, toward the bottom it goes on and on about things he did that pretty much have me convinced my suspicions about his character as reflected in his writing style were dead on. The worst writing I have ever seen published is in "Koi Varieties: Japanese Colored Carp-Nishikigoi". His self aggrandizing tone and rather disturbing contempt for Chinese culture really put me off-I think the guy was coming out of the "red scare" mentality but this was printed in 1992 and still shows a cold contempt for other cultures and art styles while promoting his personal art collection and tastes.
Think I will now take a break from email to do a large painting of koi. The images depicted will be direct plagiarisms of the images in the offending koi book, which appear to have been lifted from catalogs printed in Japanese. The resulting painting will be sold by auction, proceeds to benefit the library so they can buy some modern books.

No one says bad things about Axelrod in public in general. His history is that he sues at the drop of a hat, TFH was notorious for this. I'm not surprised Dr. Paul spoke carefully in public but was more open in private.I believe I made a lot of fun of Axelrod at the auction when auctioning his books. I could go on about how he pays people to write books but puts his name on them. Most of his books are like that. He has about as much knowledge of hamster keeping as I do, and I last owned a hamster when I was 10 years old. I wouldn't waste good money on anything he publishes unless it contains pictures of killifish :-) The aqualog series is better at that, too.Axelrod's ethics have always seemed to be nonexistant.
