As another attendee at the meeting in Pennsylvania that's described (woo! a fish club meeting I was at is now famous :-) ) and as the person that *asked* the question about his greatest contribution to the hobby, let me add that the newspaper article is missing a few things: 1) At least one person has committed suicide after losing a lawsuit or being swindled by Axelrod 2) He dealt in pornography early in his career, so don't give me this 'I don't feel like a criminal' junk 3) The bit with the cardinal tetra is as described; Meyers had the fish for some time but never got around to describing it until about the time the rumors of Axelrod's activity became known. Axelrod bought the fish from Jack Freiberg(sp?) in Newark, for whom the Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is named. He credits Freiberg with providing the 'holotype' and 'paratype' of the tetra in the TFH article that describes the fish. I'm having a bout of CRS right now, can't remember who it was that actually did the scientific description.
One thing though; I was very impressed with his presentation and manner. One of the best public speakers I've ever heard, and I've heard plenty at fish meetings. He looked a lot like what I envision Hemingway looked like - tanned, white haired, wore a nautical blazer of some sort, deck shoes, ... I'm actually glad I got an opportunity to hear him speak, he *rarely* spoke in public and had little to do with the aquarium clubs in NJ.
