Re: pit bulls

The saying "there are no bad dogs, only bad owners" holds very true. Many dog
breeds that have been decimated by sudden popularity and irresponsible breeding
and handling get a bad rap from people that have no experience with them,
other than what they hear in the news. As an owner of a Rottweiler that is a
certified Delta Service dog, allowed to ride in plane cabins, do therapy work
in hospitals and schools, with 3 members of her litter sharing canine good
citizen awards, I find the stereotypes they are given quite frustrating. My
dog is well trained and a pleasure to be around. I know many people with
golden retrievers, labs, and newfoundlands that cannot say that. It is not the
dog breeds fault that the people that have no business owning dogs tend to be
drawn to them for all the wrong reasons.

  Subject: pit bulls

While that is a very sad story about animal abuse, I have to say that I am
not a big fan of pit bulls, especially after having been bit in the face and
having my two front baby teeth eaten by a hunting dog when I was seven. At
least the abuse/attack was fairly quick and the dog was put out of its misery.

My cousin had a pit bull and it would play with full-sized car tires. And
when it would bite, it wouldn't let go, even though you could lift the dog up
and spin it around while it had its mouth clamped on something.

A lot of people in Tacoma want "pits" and when I went to the animal shelter,
it was full of them. I've heard of them attacking and killing people. People in
wheelchairs, kids, neighbors... Maybe this kid had a bad experience with one.
Maybe the guy wanted to sic the dog on him later. Who knows. You would have
more of my sympathy if it was a golden retriver, lab, newfoundland, and other
dogs not breed to fight.
