Re: pit bulls

I have a friend who quit training rottweilers when the fad hit of having them be mean... until then they were professional working security animals and splendidly trained by my friend. He made a lot of money at it too, but was sickened by all the people who wish to have a scary pet. Come to the fairs down this way and you can really see people who look like their dogs-the mean scary looking dudes with even scarier girlfriends and kids, with the big dogs, they are almost comical. I have seen little dogs like my boyfriend's deceased poodle pomeranian savagely attack, the only difference between them and the big dog is they can't do as much damage. Didn't mean she didn't want to-she attacked big dogs and kids all the time. And then there are those dogs that the owners would love to have be scary, like the one owned by a couple tweakers I had the misfortune of knowing in Portland. "Napalm" was a beast of a rottweiler and his owners looked twice as nasty. Napalm would sit next to me and drool in my lap while I petted him, normally I am afraid of big dogs but this one was really sweet. The tweakers tried to sick Napalm on me, that is the nature of tweakers... they said I made their cats run away somehow and were mad about it... Napalm looked between me and them a few times and then he ran away too. They couldn't make this poor dog be mean. Fortunately for Napalm he is no longer with them. Seeking rehab in another state, they abandoned him with someone else. I have also known sweet as sugar pit bulls and boxer pit mixes, but you never know. One of them hopped his fence one day and attacked an old lady. Didn't bite, just stood on her chest barking after he knocked her over. I think I'll stick with fish, they are much safer. They bite but it doesn't usually do much damage...

The saying "there are no bad dogs, only bad owners" holds very true. Many dog breeds that have been decimated by sudden popularity and irresponsible breeding and handling get a bad rap from people that have no experience with them, other than what they hear in the news. As an owner of a Rottweiler that is a certified Delta Service dog, allowed to ride in plane cabins, do therapy work in hospitals and schools, with 3 members of her litter sharing canine good citizen awards, I find the stereotypes they are given quite frustrating. My dog is well trained and a pleasure to be around. I know many people with golden retrievers, labs, and newfoundlands that cannot say that. It is not the dog breeds fault that the people that have no business owning dogs tend to be drawn to them for all the wrong reasons.

 Subject: pit bulls

While that is a very sad story about animal abuse, I have to say that I am not a big fan of pit bulls, especially after having been bit in the face and having my two front baby teeth eaten by a hunting dog when I was seven. At least the abuse/attack was fairly quick and the dog was put out of its misery. My cousin had a pit bull and it would play with full-sized car tires. And when it would bite, it wouldn't let go, even though you could lift the dog up and spin it around while it had its mouth clamped on something.
A lot of people in Tacoma want "pits" and when I went to the animal shelter,
it was full of them. I've heard of them attacking and killing people. People in
wheelchairs, kids, neighbors... Maybe this kid had a bad experience with one. Maybe the
guy wanted to sic the dog on him later. Who knows. You would have more of my sympathy if
it was a golden retriver, lab, newfoundland, and other dogs not breed to fight.
