Re: [GSAS-Member] questions

Have you tested the water? Any nitrite/nitrate detectable? Some fish seem to plug along at 20-40ppm nitrate which the books say is fine but then suddenly they just can't take it anymore. Discus are especially sensitive. Did you add any new fish lately and what were they, were they quarantined? And last does he have any outwardly visible symptoms of disease like slimey coat, patches of white, spots, distended gills and heavy breathing, emaciated etc. I would guess it doesn't like something in the vicinity. There are anecdotal stories of gouramis doing this behavior as a result of loud noise such as tv or stereos, and headlights at night or living near a fire station in view of a window could also do it. How big is the tank and do they have cover? Discus scare me... they are quite susceptible to things that don't even ruffle a fin on a neon or the other cheap fish you can get. If you don't quarantine and maybe even if you do the other fish can sicken the discus and kill it while not showing any symptoms. Breeders often keep them in huge tanks with massive daily water changes and super low ph water as bacteria don't do well in low ph water, in near sterile conditions really. What bites about cheap fish is you can get a one dollar fish at a store and it may come with a 3 month guarantee but it only covers the buck you spent on the new fish, not the 300 bucks you spent on the fish already in the tank. Always good to quarantine. So maybe do a run of water tests and report back, maybe that will reveal something that can easily be attended to without medication.
Good luck!
My vals also don't care what substrate they are in. I even have them in a substrate free tank with some rocks holding them down. They wound their way under and around the rocks and just keep on growing... amazingly persistent.

Hello again
After being scolded for miss posting, I still have the same questions if anyone
can find in their heart to forgive me:( here it is again.

Hello all
I have a couple questions I hope one or some could answer for me. First, I have a discus that for some reason is racing around the tank like crazy. He is still eating and doesn't have any noticeable spots or the like. The odd thing is I have had two dicsus die within a month of each other and they did the same racing around before they perished, with no noticeable problems before hand. I perform a 50% water change weekly and all other water perimeters are within range. I am on well water so my thought would be something in the system that acures in the summer time. I have had the fish since last fall, with no issues up too last month. Ideas? The second question is a little easier. Has anyone grown Vallisneria in a sand substrate before? How did it due? Any details would be appretiated.
