Re: [GSAS-Member] crawdads

Just make sure no fish try to "help" him along, they are also very soft just after moulting and easily damaged/eaten, if he hides under rocks and there are no fish that can get in and hurt him he should be ok. I don't know how long they take to moult, if the site says a few days is normal then maybe he is ok but I would still use the iodine with crustaceans as it seems to help. I have third generation glass shrimp that seem to agree. They were a silly project-breeding feeder shrimp. I don't know about cichlid vital, I just got the stuff by Kent Marine but there are many other companies marketing it. It's super cheap at pharmacies as Lugol's solution if you want to dilute it yourself and keep the rest for the medicine cabinet. If you do get that at the pharmacy also get a dosing syringe or pipette, the kind used to squirt medicine for babies. You will need to measure the darn stuff as it doesn't take much to dose most tanks.

Thanks Kate-

I had just read something about using iodine, that it
is really is a must...so will go find some tomorrow. I do have cichlid vital, which has iodine in it, would
that work? Also read that it can take a few days for
them to moult....

You say "stuck" , so is he stuck, since the back half
has come off and not the front? And how could I help
him get "un-stuck"?
As to isolating the one moulting, I have no other
space for him....it was a struggle for my husband to
let us set tis tank up for them! LOL.....But their is
caves and rocks for them to hide in.

Some of these types of critters can't complete the
moult without iodine. If you can get ahold of any kind of marine aquarium iodine supplement dose that at half strength. According to Az Aquatic Gardens this is the way to go, dosing either one time a week at half strength or full strength every other week or after water changes. I use Kent Marine's version, though there are many and chemically they should be about the same. Lugol's from the pharmacy is overly strong, the stuff for aquariums is diluted and of course more costly.
I don't know if the one which is stuck will make it
but I would isolate it til it does so it doesn't get picked on. Even if it doesn't make it the other as well as any aquatic shrimp will benefit
from this nutrient.
Anyone know if plain old iodized table salt at a
tsp/gallon would cut it? I use non-iodized salt and then dose with iodine, maybe I don't need two products...

Hello-

Our daughter Emma was one of the lucky ones which
got
o bring home 2 crawdads this summer from the
picinic...they are both doing very well, and seem
to
be happy.

My question is how long does it take for them to
shed
their outer skin. One of them is in the process of
doing this now. The bottom half has come off, but
it
is working on the top half now. We noticed this
earlier today.

Thanks!

Trish
