[GSAS-Member] Hair algae from hell

I've got this really evil hair algae growing on some of the plants in my 90 gal. planted tank. This is a type I have never seen before. It's bright green and feels like steel wool. Grows very fast. Mostly it's on some large bolbitis and java fern, which can be removed from the tank for treatment. What I'm looking for is some kind of a solution I can dip the leaves of the plant in that will kill the algae without killing the plant. I started doing frequent water changes (50%), hoping to reduce nutrients. So far, after 3 weeks, no change. I hate to resort to chemical warfare, but feel I must do something before this stuff takes over everything. Might try rosy barbs or shrimp.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Bob
