Hi Bob: If it was my tank with the problem, I would cut off all the leaves that have the hair algae growing on them. I noticed that algae seems to grow on stuff that is not doing to well. I had it in my little ten-gallon killie tank. It was growing on some wood. I took out the wood and the water sprite and since then, no more hair algae problem. The other alternative is to dip the plant in a 10% bleach solution for up to 2 minutes. But then, it seems to grow back anyway, so I think trimming the stuff it is growing on is the best bet. This is a type I have never seen before. It's bright green and feels like steel wool. Grows very fast. Mostly it's on some large bolbitis and java fern, which can be removed from the tank for treatment. What I'm looking for is some kind of a solution I can dip the leaves of the plant in that will kill the algae without killing the plant. I started doing frequent water changes (50%), hoping to reduce nutrients. So far, after 3 weeks, no change. I hate to resort to chemical warfare, but feel I must do something before this stuff takes over everything. Might try rosy barbs or shrimp. Does anyone have any suggestions?
