Though pH and hardness are separate measures, they're not really
indepentend. Hardness influences pH. Alkaline water is normally
inherently hard, as it's the hardness (in particular, dissolved
carbonates) that raises pH.
By contrast, though, acidic water can be soft AND it can also be hard
water with a lot of CO2 dissolved in it. Think seltzer water. Lots of
minerals, but acidic.
