With no experience to suggest this idea, what about setting one heater 
to the lower temperature,
and then adding a second heater on a timer, and having the second 
heater at the 6 or so degrees warmer temperature.
I'd have it the warmer heater go on in the AM, since the changes in 
temperature could be attributed to shallow water heating up in the 
daytime.
I've watched huge catfish spawn near where my parents kept a sailboat, 
many years ago. It was in VERY shallow water, whose
temperature must have changed throughout the day.
