Two possiblities I can think of:1) when the substrate in the tank gets really, really anaerobic, you'll get hydrogen sulfide bubbles when the substrate's disturbed, from the decaying organic matter. Nasty smelling stuff. Probably not good for fish. Have you uprooted any plants. Have the fish uprooted any plants? Any decorations/rocks/driftwood moved? 2) You said the smell came from behind the tank. Could anything have fallen back there and gotten damp/moldy? 3) The smell's coming from something else in the room. Time to catch up with that laundry? :-)

Hi, Susan. You seem to be having such success with your shrimp. It sounds like fun to me. Would you mind you explaining your setup? Maybe you could write an article on their care for the newsletter :) I am interested insetting up a cherry shrimp tank in a 5g with some plants. I am thinking allI'd need is a desk lamp or small lamp of some kind, some sand, a small heater, and an air stone. Does that sound about right? Do you keep any fish or other creatures with your shrimp? Thanks! I am having an unusual situation with my big planted tank. There is a weird sulfur-like smell coming from the cabinet area. Maybe my eHeim filter is burning out? I cleaned out the filter today, thinking it was the tank, but just the usual dirty filter smell. Also, now available, Really Red Cherry Shrimp - $2 each.
