He had quite a few scales missing, and some deep scrapes on his side. His color has improved dramatically since then. He seems to be feeling fine in his 10 gallon hospital tank. Susan was over and took a look today. She thinks he might have pop eye bilaterally. I think his eyes are very pronounced, but cannot tell if this is pop eye. He can see fine judging from his hiding from me. It is really cute that he hides behind a lava rock with a hole in it. I can see most of his body, just not his eye. Just like my child, if they cannot see me, they think I cannot see them.John On Feb 27, 2006, at 5:01 PM, matt kaufman wrote:Hard to diagnose remotely (a picture perhaps might help). It might just be healing from a scrape. If it's acting normally and not scratching at it by rubbing int rocks or whatever, it's probably fine. If the fish starts 'paying attention' to the growth it might be best to isolate it and figure out a treatment. WHen you say the fish was 'near death', what was going on? Texas cichlids can be boisterous and being scraped up isn't unusual for them when fighting with other fish, or rocks, or heaters, or whatever they decide annoys them (fingers, glass walls, lids...).Also, a texas cichlid that I was given, and rescued from sure death, is healing, but has a growth on the side of the structure that hold his eye. It is pinkish, and looks a bit like a cocoon, or like what you get when a wool sweater pills. It measures about 3 mm by 10 mm. Kind of egglike or ellipsoid in shape. It has grown from about 1.5 mm by 6 mm in about 2 weeks. It does not appear to be affecting his/her vision.Thank you.
