Don't know how you brought it up, but low pH usually means 'not enough water changes' and too much decomposing cruft in the tank. Adding stuff to raise it is, at best, an emergency stopgap and its better to address the real problem. Glad your fish recovered.

His pH was low, a couple of days after I brought it up
he was eating again (still wants fingers, but is now
willing to settle for fish food).
