Sometimes I do have to struggle to maintain a pH low enough to be suitable for the fish in question, and it has nothing at all to do with 'not enough water changes' or too much decomposing gunk. Think about receiving a bag full of licorice gouramis with bag pH of ~6.0 (wink).
