Re: [GSAS-Member] Your Opinion...

What people are willing to dish out to other people and to animals is
discouraging.

Chickens that produce our eggs are not given enough room to move
around, and have their beaks removed to prevent damage to other
chickens. They become aggressive because of that captivity. Calves
raised for veal are held in pens where they are not even allowed to
support their own weight. Pigs, which are considered among the smartest
animals, are equally mistreated in pork prduction. Perhaps the closest
thing to this that humans experience is solitary confinement in prison
cells. The jailers in the US prisons in Guantanamo do not think
anything of torturing human beings. You can imagine what they would do
to animals.

What can we do? Show by example how to treat pets, treating those in
our care as kindly as possible, and sharing our opinions with others.
GSAS members are good at doing all of these things. At a GSAS meeting,
a speaker we had from the aqurium products industry said it is illegal
in England to sell fish tanks less than a gallon in size. We could
propose similar legislation if we decide as a group that is a priority.

Hi,

I recently received this inquiry and I thought it would be a fresh
topic for
discussion. I'll summarize the responses and provide them to the
individual
who is asking.

Hello! I was in a crafts store (ACMoore) the other day and saw that
they
were selling large clear glass vases with instructions to fill it with
water
and buy dwarf african clawed frogs in it along with a peace lily plant
whose
roots have been thoroughly cleaned of all soil. This is similar to the
"War
and Peace" setups that were popular some time ago using beta fish.

I want to know your opinion about this. Is it cruel to the frogs (and
to
the beta fish for that matter)? I would enjoy doing this and observing
the
frogs if I thought I was doing no harm and that they would be happy in
this
environment.

Thank you for your advice.

Thanks,

RIck
