Re: [GSAS-Member] Seeking Female Gardneri Clown Killifish

What Dave said. Normal gardneri (Fundulopanchax gardneri, or older types
sometimes use Aphyosemion gardneri) are trivially easy to sex - the females are
colorless while the males resplendent in reds, blues and yellows.

I think you mean clown killies as in 'epiplatys annulatus', a smallish,
vertically barred killie. Look around for online images like
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.elacuarista.com/atlas/images/Epiplatys_annulatus_casal2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.elacuarista.com/atlas/A/aplocheilus_annulatus.htm&h=307&w=540&sz=16&hl=en&start=12&tbnid=BBnRiHW0u20YaM:&tbnh=75&tbnw=132&prev=/images%3Fq%3Depiplatys%2Bannulatus%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

which has the male above the female. As for obtaining those, well, actually
I've been looking for some pairs myself locally to no effect. You might
consider attending the West Coast Weekend killifish show in April in Portland,
there are bound to be lots of really cool killies there. Details:

If these are your first killies, Epiplatys annulatus is a bit of a tricky one
to keep and breed. The best way is to have several tanks set up with snail-free
hydra-free floating plants like Water sprite or hornwort, fairly thick covers,
and feed the adults newly hatched baby brine shrimp till you start seeing
juveniles appear, then move the adults to another tank and repeat the process
until you have a lot of fry. Small tanks like 2.5 gallons work fine, room
temp-ish (68-75), soft water, mild filtration (no power filters or whatnot, a
small box or sponge filter.)
