I have my ponds right up near the house. I've never covered them. If you've got a boy dog like my male Siberian, he's marked all over around the ponds and raccoons are much more afraid of large dogs than humans, I hear (wink). I've had no evidence of raccoons in the yard but plenty of evidence of their presence in my poultry pastures! I keep large Rubbermaid containers (~ 30 gallons??) in my utility/laundry room during the winter for goldfish and whiteclouds. I have a filter going, and have a light strip over the containers. No heat, but it never freezes in there anyway. I have a bunch of duckweed on top of the water. I may not net out all the whiteclouds from outside, but I have enough kept inside to get the population going again during the spring/summer. They breed like rabbits!
