Re: [GSAS-Member] Red Worms

I was concerned that they were tapeworms and had a long discussion with
Steev about them. I don't have any problems with my tank. All the fish are
very healthy. I rarely add livestock, and it's been like that for a couple
years. Steev told me they were harmless, and I haven't had any problems in
this tank, and I have four very nice discus that I have raised from
half-dollar size. Now they are as large as my hand and the largest lays
eggs. I would like to know more about them, so maybe we should try and
contact the guy that came up here from Davis University who showed us all
kinds of parasites.

I once had some giant West African Millipedes that had some type of mite
that ran all over them. The millipedes acted as a giant bus. I decided to
remove all their mites, which took quite awhile because they could hide
under the segments and in between their 60+ legs. Well, after that, my male
and female millipede pair became very inactive, whereas before they were
eating fine and even mating (quite weird).

So, if the clock isn't broken, don't fix it, right? Sorry my red worms
grossed you out. I really think their okay. If they weren't, I wouldn't sell
anything from that tank.

Susan

Actually I think they are tubifex, though of the 'giant long stringy
variety'. I've seen them get big before and the worm isn't segmented.
I got some too - Susan did you get some of the Bacopa? That was the only
plant I purchased and the worms were on it. Whoever brought those plants in,
well, thanks for the gift(?). You might want to do some major tank
renovation...
