Well I feel it is easier because with my Filstar I simply disconnect the hoses 
with the easy disconnect valve then I can take the whole unit to the sink 
without spilling any water or disturbing anything in the tank. Disconnecting 
this way also keeps any of the dirty filter water that might be in the filter 
from getting back into the tank. 

Another thing that is nice about canisters is that you can mix and match your 
media to your exact preferences. For example, if you need a lot of mechanical 
filtration but not a lot of bio filtration because you have a lot of plants, 
then you can put more mechanical filtration media into the canister. Or you can 
load up the bio media to help with a high fish load.
