I admit that I've got a tendency to remain very very low-tech when it
comes to planted tanks, but I did dabble in 'special' substrates. Flourite
(bagged and labelled....not used), laterite, EcoComplete....and prefer to
stick with my old stand-by that produces happy plants for years without
constant pumping in of chemicals and CO2 (wink).....layer of potting soil
or peat with a overlayer of plain old aquarium gravel over that. My Sags
will take over the whole tank as will babytears or rotala if allowed. I
like to stick with tanks that are no taller than the standard 10 gallon
tank and then I seem to be able to supply adequate lighting with a couple
simple strip lights rather than investing in high-tech lighting
(expensive). I ended up having to buy a compact flourescent light strip
for my 29 gallon which does not make me a happy camper. Too high tech (big
smile). Once you figure out which low-light plants will grow for
you....and you stick with those, all is well.
