Re: [GSAS-Member] ATTN: Erik Olson - Please Relate Luis Navarro's Excel Treatment Procedure for Algae

Wow Erik!

Sorry to hear the flu/cold thing has hit you and your family, I had a couple
of days of that this week too but I'm doing better.

What an excellent presentation/explanation; I was hoping for a short note
and you sent a novel!! I can see the vast improvement from the initial
photo to the treatment completion which confirms the effectiveness of the
procedure in reducing algae. I must admit it is much better than I would
have expected. I've been doing a lot of reading on the web (mostly APC) and
your results are confirmed by others who have tried this procedure.

I don't know, but I think that the glutaraldehyde in Excel that provides the
algaecide properties, works only as long as it is used. The active
ingredient (glutaraldehyde) apparently breaks down after 24 hours or less
into carbon that the plants can utilize for growth. If the conditions that
originally allowed the algae to flourish are not corrected, or if treatment
with Excel (glutaraldehyde) are not continued (possibly at a lower
maintenance dosage?) then the algae can return. I think I will pick up a
bottle of Excel and give it a try. I will be happy to report back results if
others express interest.

Thanks again for the excellent report, if you do this well when you are ill
I can't imagine what it would have been like if you had been feeling good!
Take care of yourself and your family.

Roy
