Actually, it isn't all that bad. I've had many broken heaters in tanks and the
fish
have done well. If you take the heater out as soon as it gets broken you can
get by
without a water change even. I knew a person once who had a heater break, and
he didn't
notice it for about a week. He only grew worried about the fish when he noticed
that
they would occassionally "pass out" when swimming on one end of the tank. Turns
out
they were getting shocked when the heater came on if they were near it. After
he took
it out everything was fine.
