So long as the water is hard enough and you carefully select the  
species they can be ok.  I should have been more specific.  Fish like  
lamprologus multifasciatus wouldn't mix well with mbuna, similar to  
most julies(territory battles that the mbuna would likely win), but  
fish like tropheus could probably get along with more peaceful  
malawians (or maybe some victorians) like Auloncara species.  My main  
point was that they don't do well in community tanks.
