I've never had to do more than two.  In the case of driftwood, I would
remove it from the tank and treat it in a smaller container.  That way you
could increase the dosage and speed up the process.  Once the algae is gone,
soak the wood in untreated water to leach out any absorbed chemical.

I haven't tried it but I don't think I'd use this treatment method in a tank
with amphibians,

have such a simple solution.  How many weeks of treatments did you find were
needed before you saw results?
