[GSAS-Member] koi

There are many color varieties of koi; many of which I can't remember the names
of and
some I've never seen. I just moved a bunch of them so that the ones that breed
will be
the colors and scale-types that I like, mostly blue and white patterns - some
"Doitsu"
scales and some Diamond Scale (glittery) and one very bright metallic platinum
(see
attached picture if this works).

I keep the koi outside all year. Some koi nuts bring them in or heat the pond a
little
in the winter. Mine have done pretty well outside for the last 15 or so years.
Last
year I brought the fry indoors but that was so much work I've decided to avoid
that
when I can. The fry that stayed in the pond (that survived) were MUCH bigger
than the
ones I kept inside.

Sometimes people think of big fish as they do big dogs; that they will get to
their
"adult" size in short order, but that's not the way it goes with koi. You could
have a
little koi for a year indoors and not have him get very big, if he doesn't pig
out all
the time. A really big koi is probably a really old koi. A friend of mine has a
young
one in a fish bowl and he seems quite happy. He'll eventually get too big of
course.
Outdoors they grow fast, but still that's only a couple inches a year.
