Actually, people often keep koi in an aquarium and they do pretty well. True they can get big, but not right away, and it depends on how much you feed them. If you give them all they want they grow fast and make a mess, but they don't need that much to live on. I gave a baby koi to a friend of mine last year, and she keeps him in a fishbowl. He seems happy in there and is very tame, but he is still less than two inches because she keeps the feeding moderate, and things just don't grow as big in a bowl. Sometimes people use a koi or goldfish in a tank with othe4r fish as kind of a bottom feeder because they will clean up after other fish that might be sloppy eaters. They don't mind picking at the gravel looking for food, and sometimes that can help, like when you're having a Blue-Green algae problem.
