Re: [GSAS-Member] Fish hunting mammals

Not to beat an already dead thread, BUT...

I too have seen river otters here, and in the city proper even; there is
definitely a family of them living in Discovery Park (Magnolia neighborhood,
due west of Queen Anne). My dog Mac and I accidently surprised a female and
her pup about a month ago while on a sunrise run. (OK, yes, I confess we
were on the beach without a leash... BAD owner! Mac is a good dog though,
and immediately left them once I asked). We hightailed it off the beach and
back to the trail once we saw them, so no harm no foul, luckily. (I would
not bet against that otter if it came to a fight anyway!) I watched the
pair of them playing in the water for quite a while afterwards. It is the
third time now in 4 years that I have seen them there, and I have seen their
tracks on the beach much more frequently. I would bet that sightings are
best on weekdays, within a half hour or so of sunrise or sunset, and on low
tides, with LOW tides definitely being the key common denominator for me so
far.

Fascinating creatures; too bad they are so hard on home ponds and their
fishy residents! Ill take raccoon shenanigans over otter prowlers any day.

Cheers,
Connie
(who does have one grow-out koi in the 1.5inch+ range... this is going to be
a fun contest! ;+)
(oh, and some of my *failure to thrive* koi met the Belonesox this week, I
confess; means I am down to less than 20...)
