Re: [GSAS-Member] Question about setting up a new tank
On my 75 Gallon tank, I had it fairly heavily stocked with African
Cichlids, so I went a little overkill on filtration, but IMO, it's
better to overfilter and have some redundancy than to underfilter. I
had a Marineland C-360 Canister filter. It was an EXCELLENT filter,
quiet, efficient, and it was easy to tell when to do maintenance on
it, because flow decreased dramatically. The design allowed for
virtually no by-pass which is a good thing in a filter like that. In
addition to the C360, I had a Whisper 40 (I think?) that I had to trim
down (there's a depression where the inlet tube hung down) so it would
fit over the large lip on the 75 gallon. I also had a powerhead with
a sponge filter that kept the bottom "stirred up." IMO, redundancy is
your best bet in the case that something fails (and it inevitably
will). I also had 2 heaters. Also, using 3 different sources for
water movement and filtration allows for the ability to "tune" your
setup to reduce accumulation of poo. I didn't have any poo settle on
the sand.
