DOWN to talk with the club, as in he lives in Canada or something?? He should definitely see if he can find some fishers to hang out with up there then too; they have way more than we do down here, fishing the same run (but no reefnetters as far as I know; I could be wrong about that though). Again, PSC.org has more details; they are the governing body managing the Canada/US agreements about this fishery and have all the pertinent data. Well, if he wants to see Sockeye the answer is no, at least with the Fraser River run; it is definitely an early summer to mid summer fishery, and they are only allowed to fish a very small window in the peak of the actual run. But sometimes they leave the gear in the water to fish the Dogs, or chum salmon, which is a fall run. Some friends of mine and I went up last year to fish with them on Opening Day of Chum season, which was October first. BUT, there are actually only 12 active Reefnet licenses out there, and only a few of them fish the Dogs. Who does and doesnt seems to vary widely by the year, and is very weather and sell-price dependent. And the brother of a crew member on the gear I know went up on I think Oct 10th last year, and instead of getting to fish he ended up helping pull the gear instead. So, in other words, it is even more unpredictable than the Sockeye run (which is highly unpredictable too!) and is not one I would risk planning a whole trip around. At least get him started watching the PSC.org website; they have test catches, zones, etc. and predictions as we get closer to summer of what the run sizes and allowable catches might be. He can also get on the email notification list, which is a good way to keep track of the developing data for the coming season, so I have found anyway. Relevant to him because if it is a low- or no-predicted fishery, he might as well wait until the following year or so anyway. It would also be good to come up on a year that the Humpys (pinks) are running with the Sockeye, which happens only every other year, if he really wants to increase his chances of seeing fish. I cannot remember where in the cycle we are anymore since I dont go up to participate nearly as often as I used to. AND, if worse comes to worse, you can always send him somewhere around the Ballard Locks/fish ladder; I have no idea what the diving regulations are around there, but it is something. Or the Issaquah ladder; those going through the Ballard locks are headed there for the most part, as far as I know anyway. Not sure about the seasonal peaks with them though. Well, I hope all this helps, even if it isnt exactly what you wanted to hear. ;+) Cheers, Connie > Date: Tue, 10 Mar 2009 13:31:01 -0700 > From: kathy@thekrib.com > To: gsas-member@thekrib.com > Subject: Re: [GSAS-Member] Salmon diving > > Hi Connie, > > WOW, this would be awesome!!!! > > The only problem is that GSAS doesnt' meet during July/Aug.
