Take a fitting with you and play until it fits.  From experience:

The thin wall stuff collapses under suction.
To join two hoses, the plastic connectors can slip off (use hose clamp) or act 
as a blockage.
The python 'shutoff' causes problems

Once, I was building a thermostated valve thingie to mix warm water under the 
sink and feed to a supply hose (the old python) with a bigger diameter drain 
(to be pumped to water barrel).  I think I have the parts finally, but never 
set it up :(  My current set up uses a Mag pump w/ garden hose to pull water 
out.  Use a Pondmaster 2800 for nascar style water changes.
