I am so sorry to hear that has taken over. In my experience, if even a small
spring of that remains it will start over on the tank. I have realized that
the only thing I can do to meet my low-algae standards is to pull all my clingy
plants and throw them away. Then pull the bigger plants and give them a dip,
then do a serious vacuum of the tank and if it looks good enough then put the
non-clingy plants back. I wish I had better news than that.
If this other route you are suggesting works, I think we will all be excited.
