Hi Erik,
I use these bulbs from Wal-Mart:

in my 10 gallon with 2 sockets and they work great. That is the tank where
I am growing the Nymphoides sp. 'Taiwan' (see pic below). They have a
spectrum of about 6700K and Wallyworld is the only place I have found them.
I have had mine in operation for about a year and a half and they are still
going strong.
Follow-up. I did bike past the Lynwood Wal-Mart, and found these bulbs in
the aquarium/pet section. They were $5 each, which seems pricey when
compared to the ~$1-2 each bulbs in the main section. But these were
significantly longer and skinnier, nearly the same size as the 40-watt
tubular bulbs they replaced. Much better for spreading the light
around a small tank that expects incandescents. Full spectrum, as Roy
says.
The only bummer was having to actually go to Wal-Mart. I've never had a
shopping cart bashed as many times as today, and there was one surly
checkout cashier... makes Target seem like a designer boutique.
Now maybe I'll retro-fit some old Miro-4 reflectors I used to use with
13-watt CFs, and see if we can push just a little bit more out of em.
Wish I could buy that stuff in sheets...
