Hi Steve, Welcome to GSAS! I too came back to the hobby two years ago after a 10 year hiatus and was humbled by how much I had forgotten from 20+ year of aquarium keeping. 1) Nitrogen cycle: Keep up the water changes, I would recommend 33% daily until your ammonia level starts to drop. I have not used an Ammonia treatment so I will let other members address that. What I did on a tank I "broke down" and set back up a month ago was use some old filter material to "seed" my filter with the good bacteria so the nitrogen cycle would end quicker....and it did! It took a little less than two weeks and never really spiked badly. Give us and idea of where do you live and maybe a member lives close by and can help you out with some dirty filter material...thank us later! 2) Ick: Several different treatments are available. Steev in our club is excellent with disease problems. I typically use a tablespoon of non-iodized or aquarium salt per 5 gallons and also treat with any product that has malachite green (which unfortunately can be tough on tetras). I sure that others will provide their favorite cures. 3) Fungus on Driftwood: Fungus on new driftwood is not uncommon, but is definitely unsightly. I had it happen when I put new driftwood in my tank a couple of years ago....and that was after boiling it for 20 minutes. It eventually left on it's own, or maybe with the help of the Otocinclus in put in the tank. Anyway glad you joined us; introduce yourself and the next meeting and use an alias!
