Re: [GSAS-Member] Problems with my new tank (and the potential revocation of my new GSAS membership)

Hi Steve
Welcome to the club. The best ammonia remover are the live plants. Floating
plants, water sprite, stem plants will remove large quantities of ammonia.
The bacteria will remove some of the ammonia and will transform it in nitrite.
You need to monitor the nitrite level because is very toxic and the plants
can't asimilate the nitrite.
to remove nitrite you need to make daily water changes. The salt treatment used
for ick is also good to treat the fish intoxicated with nitrite. When the
nitrogen cycle is completed the plants will consume some or all of the nitrate.
I have a 75gal tank heavily planted. I have to do a treatment with
erictromicin(every  fourth day+50%water changes) which probably killed all my
beneficial bacteria also. I monitor the ammonia in the tank and till now I
don't have any ammonia. I believe the plants are doing a very good job. Not to
mention the beauty of a planted tank.
Good luck,
Daniel
