Re: [GSAS-Member] Problems with my new tank (and the imminent revocation of my new GSAS membership)

Steve-

On the ammonia, nitrite:
Remember that the ultimate source is the FOOD, so stop feeding.

On the Ich:
Ask yourself frequently if the white spots really ARE Ich, because they
might be something else.
The primary source of continued infection is from fish that have white spots
on them, so move those fish to a separate hospital tank if you can do it.
Another place to find Ich is in the substrate (as it undergoes cell
division) so vacuum if you get the chance.
A non-staining Ich treatment would be one of those based on quinine
hydrochloride or quinine sulfate, and these are safe for all fish if dosed
properly (and may or may not eliminate the Ich). However, remedies that combine
Malachite Green and Formalin are the most effective against Ich.
The more desperate you get - the more you should think about increasing the
salt content, because it will make a big difference.
If you have plants in there remove them and leave them in buckets or bags
for a week before putting them back.
Remember to NOT use charcoal or carbon filtration when trying to medicate,
because carbon takes chemicals OUT of the water. Likewise wood will soak up
some medicine.
