Re: Judging criteria revisited

Wow... contest comments have dropped way off.
I'm amazed that my judging guidelines are up there with Amano's. I agree
with James that with a little tweeking these two lists along with the
flower arangement ones are very similar.

So let's tweek a little. How about:

1. Overall impression
2. Balance (space and element usage)
3. Design (use of colour, decorations, levels etc.)
4. Expression (of rock face.. of river bottom... of fantasy garden)
5. Animals (appropiateness of kind of fish)

Various problems with above: can these things be made clear to judges and
contestants so that *everyone* thinks about them the same way? With good
clear explanations, probably.
4. Expression.. is a bit vague and contestants would have to say what they
were trying to convey and I feel many folks do not try to convey anything
in particular so maybe this is not a go.
I put only appropiateness of animals in because that eliminates having to
have a good photo of them. We will need a list of fish in the tank from
competitors to use this. And perhaps it is still not a good criteria.
I think condition should be excluded as it would be purely guesswork and as
I said earlier we don't want to award plastic plants a good bill of health. :)

On re-reading the lists I still think that mine (though they may need
re-working and re-describing are the most straight forward and clear when
it comes to *objective* judging. [Well... as objective as it can get.]

More tweeking:

1. Overall impression
2. Space Usage - [balance of clear space to occupied space]
3. Design - [colour usage, placement of elements]
4. Elements - [blend of wood, rock, plants to make harmonious whole]
5. Animals - [appropriatness of fish]

Yikes... one could go on forever. You know, it would be of some help if
Amano's guidelines had explanations. I've been looking in my Aqua Journals
and nowhere does he give an explanation of these criteria.
