Re: [AGA-mcm] How much more TAG?

The big unknown when this was last discussed was the
mailing costs for a "normal" size magazine. The printing
costs weren't substantially higher but that was probably
assuming conventional paper. (Personally, I'd rather see a
heavier stock, believing it gives an impresson of quality
that the thin stuff just can't do).

I spoke with our international mailer regarding this subject. He said the conventional way to ship magazines overseas is to wrap them in plastic first. Especially since we have a "pretty" cover that we wouldn't want damaged. BUT he said that the plastic sleeve shouldn't cost any more than the white envelope we are currently using, and that mailing is based on weight, not delivery method.

I don't have any information on mailing domestically. I need to talk to the mailer AFTER I get more info from the printer. But I'm not happy with the mailer as I'm 85% certain they are "romancing" our order.

Also, when last discussed, Karen mentioned that building to
that amount of content could be hard, especially all in one
jump. I'll add to that, however, going to larger but fewer
pages (requiring a smaller increase in content), would mean
either a flimsy item or using heavier stock. And heavier
paper stock could cost as much as going with 40 "full"
sized pages. Roughly speaking, of course.

Certainly we could use more material. BUT I think that Karen would only have to come up with maybe one more substantial article per issue. I have felt very constrained in the TAG layout. We could EASILY fill the pages with:

1. More ads.
2. Self-Promoting ads: Media, bookstore, t-shirts, membership. I am currently rotating the ads as best I can. 3. Bigger font for text. We are currently at 10.5 pt text, sometimes squeezing to 10 pt when I get stuck. That's pretty small for comfortable reading. 4. Bigger photos. Remember the comment about Amano's article taking 9 pages? (Well, 2 of those pages were his ad.) Articles like that with great photos could be spread out, but no one would notice with the bigger format.
5. More white space. More space around photos, boxes, callouts, etc.

So we don't really need twice the content when we are busting at the seams.

While we tighten up these estimates and figure out whether
we can fill twice the content, I thought my more modest
proposal was easily doable with the next issue without
deciding or preventing further consideration of the
"bigger" question, can we do a "full" sized 40 pages.
