The big unknown when this was last discussed was the mailing costs for a "normal" size magazine. The printing costs weren't substantially higher but that was probably assuming conventional paper. (Personally, I'd rather see a heavier stock, believing it gives an impresson of quality that the thin stuff just can't do).
Actually, our internal pages are already heavier stock than most larger format magazines. It is our cover that is lighter weight than some. Even there, many mags don't have a heavier cover than we do, the inside pages are just lighter, which allows you to feel a difference between cover and pages.
If we held at 40 pages and went "full" size and the printing price went 30% (same number of printing plates, jsut more paper), that would mean and additional $4 grand/year in printing costs.
It would be the same number of plates, but they'd be a lot bigger, so I'm not sure how the cost would pan out.
And if it doubled the mailing costs then that's an additional $3,200 per year or roughly a total increase of $7,000 per year, about the cost of 1 3/4 TAGS.
And can we afford that?
Also, when last discussed, Karen mentioned that building to that amount of content could be hard, especially all in one jump.
Yes and no. Part of the problem (and a common complaint) is that because we're always tight on space, we print photos way smaller than optimum. We also often cut a lot of photos due to space considerations. Yes, we'd need more material, but not even close to twice as much.
I'll add to that, however, going to larger but fewer pages (requiring a smaller increase in content), would mean either a flimsy item or using heavier stock. And heavier paper stock could cost as much as going with 40 "full" sized pages. Roughly speaking, of course.
My head is whirling a bit with that one... "Just the facts, sir, just the facts."<g>
While we tighten up these estimates and figure out whether we can fill twice the content, I thought my more modest proposal was easily doable with the next issue without deciding or preventing further consideration of the "bigger" question, can we do a "full" sized 40 pages.
In fact, if we simply add another sheet of paper (4 pages) for now, (something I'd dearly like to do) I'm NOT going to add more text content, but ask Cheryl to loosen things up a bit to allow the photos to be printed at a larger size.
My personal feeling is that a bigger and better TAG is our very best marketing tool. If we could actually swing going to a larger format, we would be breaking new ground for a hobby organization. NO ONE has a full color, full size mag.
