Re: [AGA-mcm] How much more TAG?

Here's some numbers. No doubt Scott will feel an intense urge to create a spreadsheet. :-)

We are currently paying Eagle Press $2936.45 for each issue of TAG, with the following specs:

Quantity: 1100
Cover 100# Gloss
Inside 80# Gloss
No. of Pages: 40

James gave me a quote of $2900 for 1000 copies in December of 2004 when he raised the prices by $230.50 per issue. So even if we do *nothing,* the cost for TAG will increase this year by $922, or 8%. To print 100 extra copies of TAG last time increased the price by $36.45.

1. To add one sheet, or 4 pages to the current TAG, it will cost $3262.72. That's $326.27, or about 10%, more than we are paying now. (Duh--bear with me.)

2. To keep all specs the same, but print a full-sized magazine (8.5 x 11), the cost is $4941.93. That's $2005.48, or about 40%, more. Effectively we double the size of the magazine for 40% more cost.

3. To print a full-sized magazine, but change the inside paper to 70# (which would be fine, but probably the minimum we would want to have, according to James) the cost would be $4543.73. That's $1607.28, or about 35%, more than we are paying now. Reducing the paper weight saves us $398.20, or 8%.

4. To print 52 pages (the size of my Texas Gardening Magazine, which is very nice) with the same paper we have now, it would cost $6177.41. That's $3240.96, or about 52%, more than we are paying now. It is $1235.48 more than the 40-page full-sized magazine, or about 20% extra cost for 23% extra magazine.

5. For a 52-page magazine with 70# paper inside, the price would be $5679.66. That's $2743.21, or about 48% more, than we are paying now. Reducing the paper weight saves us $497.75, or about 8%, as before.

We *could* see slight additional savings by printing the cover also with 70# paper, but he doesn't recommend it.

I don't yet have any hard numbers for mailing. Working on that.

This is just a report. I'm going to have another cup of coffee, and then tell y'all what I think about all this in another e-mail.
