Re: [AGA-mcm] busted amano talk on 2001 video

Cool. I am glad I stuck with him on this. He literally bought $350 worth of AGA stuff, virtually everything in the catalog.

The guy wrote back and said "take your time." I *am* going to give him something for his troubles, since not only did he buy everything in the AGA catalog, it sounds like he's actually watching everything. But it will be balanced with the timetable of getting my computer in appropriate shape for video work, which is currently freaking me out.

Personally, I can't see redoing the disk -- especially if
it means recapturing all the hours of video from the tape.
I also can't see offering replacements that haven't been
asked for. Besides being a lot of work, it would be mucho
expensive.

It's not so much that it isn't noticeable as it is a matter
of translated mon-the-fly-material and I expected a delay
anyhow. Sure, Tomoko actually is faster than that, but it
just didn't matter much to me.

Paul, I took a look, and you're completely right. There
is NO SOUND AT
ALL for the first 20 seconds of visual, and then it kicks
in. It only
appears to be relevant to the lecture. So THANKS for
spotting it. I have
no idea how this got onto the master at all, and more
importantly, why
NOBODY has noticed it yet. Clearly I'm going to have to
send replacements
to everyone at some point.

Now the bad news. In order to produce a new disk, I will
have to
recapture all the original footage off tape and re-render
every talk for
the whole disk from scratch. As I have a new baby in the
house (and a
computer that isn't working quite right at the moment), I
literally may
not be able to get this done for months. If you want a
quick response, I
will refund your money for the one DVD. If you can hang
tight for a bit
(maybe weeks, not months), I will send you a disk with
JUST amano's talk
(rendered at higher bitrate -- gotta give you something
for being
patient), as well as the full disk when that's done. Let
me know your
preference, and thanks again for your patience.

realized the slide she
was describing was not the one on the screen. My first
thought was that I
might be loosing my mind. His second talk "Live Aqua
Demo" is fine. And so is
the rest of the DVD. Based on what you are saying about
tracks this might be
the same problem on all of your 2001 disks.

At the start of the talk, does it appear in sync?

At the *end* of the talk, does the delay clearly
continue, as in Mr.
Amano's mouth move but you can't hear anything, even
in the background?

One possibility here is that the 20 seconds is just
how the talk went. with
the overlayed translation and all.

What's funny here is that there aren't really "tracks"
per se, but one
single track with chapter stops... that's the way
ReelDVD masters disks.
I'll go look at the master disk too & see if I can see
a similar effect.

I checked 2000, 2001 & 2002. All okay except for the
track mentioned
(track one 2001). Maybe you should check another disk
to see if that track
is bad on all disks. It is very subtle as the delay
is actually about 20
seconds, with the narrative following the photo. I
was about half way
through program before it became apparent.

Hi Paul,

Was just checking the records for your address &
noticed you were the guy
who ordered our entire catalog! Before I send of
another 2001 disk, can
you check some of the other disks to see if you get
that same "30 second
delay" phenomenon? I mastered 2000, 2001 and 2002
in the same timeframe,
so they might exhibit the same symptoms for you.
