Unfortunately, the farther out you go, the harder it will be to get firm commitments from hotels, possibly on room rates but certainly on banquet charges. We had to deal with this to some extent in the negotiations with the hotels for 2004. Also, memberships in locals, because they are smaller, can change dramatically in a small period -- so there's some risk there that increases with earlier deadlines. I think whatever deadlines we present have ended up, and will in the future end up, being soft when push comes to shove. We're not flooded with proposals and we're unlikely to turn down a proposal that otherwise looks pretty good but is, say, a month late. I guess my basica view is that more than a year will reduce the number of prospective hosts while less than 9 months, which in practice actually ends up being probably 8 months or maybe less, just crowds the work too much. Is there something magic about the exact number of months? I don't thinks so. I think they're numbers we can agree on and a month or two either way probably isn't going to make much diff in practice. As for SFBAAPS and any perception of bias, we've given SFBAAPS less restrictive deadlines, and if I understand Erik's comments earlier today, a lead time for SFBAAPS of about half of what we are talking about has not been written off by everyone. SFB certainly has no room to complain that it hasn't been getting as good as anyone else. As far as bias in the other direction, well, I'd hate to tell all the other clubs that, say, six months is the deadline, and then be faced with a proposal 5 or 4 months before the event. I woulnd't want to do that in any event, which might be reason enough not to do it with SFB 9or might not) -- I'm really torn on that. sh --- Phil Edwards <biotypical@hotmail.com> wrote: > How about having a draft proposal due 12 months ahead of > time with the final > due no later than 10 months.
