I think if they couldn't get Professor Tan (which is very likely) that KL, himself, could do the talk. He wasn't the scientist involved, but it has been his interest and persistence that has brought about the interest in aquatic mosses for the purpose of aquascaping. He would probably also be able to present a much more balanced talk between the scientific discoveries he has learned working with the professor, and the uses of these plants in the aquarium.Karen----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl Rogers" <cheryl@rightstuffwebsites.com>To: "AGA Advisory Committee" <aga-mcm@thekrib.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 03, 2005 10:19 PM Subject: Re: [AGA-mcm] Fwd: SFBAAPS: AGA Program Proposal (fwd)I only have one quick thought because I am sick and can't think straight.I LOVE the idea of bringing Professor Tan for a talk about mosses. I'm not sure this subject merits keynote speaker status, but given the space in TAG lately and the interest, it's cool.BUT does he speak English? I think if they do this they should alos bring KL; he's earned it and many would love to see him and thank him in person. If I had any money I would buy KL a plane ticket myself.Cheryl S. Hieber wrote:Now not only can I not afford to go; I can't catch my breath if I get there. No, seriously, looks like a lot of hard thought went into this. I would like to give some more detailed and helpful comments by tommorrow afternoon, after I have had a chance to digest this. But briefly: Too much stuff and not enough time between for shmoozing. Nothing will happen well on Sunday but the Auction -- if there's too much activity for Fri and Sat, then maybe move the stuff to Thurs -- but 4-day events are very tiring. The auction should start as early as reasonable-- it greatly affects the financial results and by 1:00 or 2:00pm all the good buyers are gone. So the later it saterts, the less revenue, which means the higher ticket prices need to be to assure a breakeven. What will the "aquarium plant community spots" present? Will they just get up and wing it? Will they be sales pitches? Looks like commerical vendors mainly--will they be commericals--if so, maybe they should present in the vendor room? Are they considering Kingfish? How will they know how many vans to rent if they don't prebook fares? (don't forget insurance) I assume the 2 hour ride is if nothing goes wrong? No traffic problems? Is there some slack built into that. Yes, location location location -- it will determine costs and prices and attendance as much or more than any other factor. Are they still considering outside of SF for lower hotel prices? Should these notes be sent to conheads? Instead of MCM? Anyone know if more than one aquatic hobby convention is planned for the SF area in over the next 12 months? sh --- Erik Olson <erik@thekrib.com> wrote:Here's Jim's proposed schedule (that apparently gotleaked into APC back in April -- great). I am still gently pushing him toworry about the hotel contract instead (but have also critiqued a few items, such as the frenetic pace of the talks). - Erik -- Erik Olson erik at thekrib dot com ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 03 Aug 2005 13:44:21 -0400 From: jiml1029@aol.com To: erik@thekrib.com Subject: Fwd: SFBAAPS: AGA Program Proposal Erik, this is the proposed conference program I put together. Some of the feedback was to include Monterey Bay Aquarium trip (2hrs each way from SF) (Dave G.). Dave also suggested we drop Sunday Panel discussion. Also suggested was a earlier get-together for folks taking the field trips , and also starting the field trips earlier. At the OH on this Sun, we got a good turnout ~25 people. Talked with Jeff about restarting the Hotel search, but did not get the chance to talk with Dave, as he did not manage to make the second part of the day at Aqua Forest. Aqua Forest Aquarium is outstanding. They carry the ADA line and some less hi-end but good quality products. Their display aquariums are great. They have not so far used water column fertilization, and are having very quick success with the Aquasoil and Amazonica substrate. Great plant selection, pricey, but expected that. The store is very nicely set up, like the pictures I've seen of stores in Japan. George the owner has visited ADA, and he has a picture up of his entry from ADA 2004 competition, which placed 64th. I hope they are very successful.
