Re: [AGA-mcm] It's that time again -- Or - It's friggin' mid-October already? Yikes!

Just adding the "me too"... I am willing to handle some of the stuff I did in 2006, i.e., auction tech, A/V and other speaker needs, and assorted odds and ends as needed. But I think my little thingies are quite late in the process, and not important now.

If I remember right from my big list last year, the most important things that must be dealt with, in order, are:

1. Secure the Hotel.
2. Get the Speakers.
3. Make Sure Auction Doesn't Crash. (Scott added the last one because it
is so very important financially to the convention.)

Larry, is there anything we can do to help you complete the big step 1?

PS: I wouldn't worry about ACA being in Atlanta next year. Different crowd. Most likely not interested in helping, except maybe for Mark Barnett who might be worth talking to (and not sure he's helping with ACA). Interestingly, they have NOT contacted me about doing A/V, which will be the first time since 2000 that a club hasn't asked, and first time since 2003 I will not be attending ACA. I should be nice n fresh for November!

Personally, I'm all for hearing stuff I haven't heard before. Some of this
stuff is starting to sound like a catchy pop tune to me. However, they want to
see Amano and by the time the convention rolls around, it will be four years
since he was here. And I understand that he would love to come. We could decide
what's best for them to see instead of more Amano, but as you say, we aren't
busting with alternatives. Maybe we should even bring Kasselman back.

Maybe we could make two lists:

 Likely biggest draws
 Likely most interesting

And see how what the overlap is.

 Re tasks,
These are some of the tasks that come to mind – feel free to redact with
passion:

 Money Gathering:

 Sales and Sign-in Tables Staffing

 Treasury – cash management-accounting

 Ad/sponsorship selling

 Money Lending

  Oops, that’s a different list.

 Registration

 Head Counting and name-taking

 ID Tag production

 Field Trip Organizer

This is mostly a procurement (location and transport) task

 Auction Actions:

 Auction organizer

 Auction tech support

 Auctioneering

 Auction bag/ticket runners

Auction cashiers (these are really money gathering requires presence at
auction and auction system raining)

 Howdy-do Tasks:

Hotel Liaison – Waiter, there’s a fly in our soup and marimba band in our ears.

Speaker tender – care and feeding

Vendor tender – care and feeding

 Gimmee Getme Tasks:

 Hotel services procurement

Speaker procurement – invitations, follow-up, travel timing-coordination, etc.

 Speaker gift procurement

 T-shirt procurement

Solicitation – spreading the word by email, ads, or shouting to solicit
registrants

 ID Tag procurement

 Eat Drink procurement

AV equipment – local equipment supplies

 Mass entertainment – group actions:

 Goody Bag Stuffing

 Plant bagging and labeling

 The Inkspots:

             Brochure productions

             Pamphlet/leaflet production

Zen and the art of Web page creation and maintenance

 Reddy Kilowatt:

AV production coordination – setting up mics, lights, projectors,
cords

Not to be confused with AV product production

 TAG follow-up ariticle

 Duct Taper

             Ombudsmanship and real-time fire stamping

I volunteer to keep track of registration. I will not do the sales table this
year, although I am willing to recruit and train someone else to do it.

The DFWAPC is petering out lately. The last few meetings have been sort of
lame and poorly attended, mostly due to lack of leadership IMO. A huge project
of this type would either regenerate the club or break it completely.

And finally, I believe I am among friends here so I will speak honestly. I am
against having Amano speak. It's like we can't think of anyone else. I don't
have any better ideas other than what has been talked about on this list. Maybe
it's time to get some new blood in on the discussion.
