Righto! But I thought I covered that with the fish. You can seed with mulm from another tank if you want virtually skip cycling, but that's not necessary -- you're gonna have bacteria almost no matter what you do. A healthy aquarium is a bowl of warm bacteria soup :-) The organic material feeds the bacteria and heated water cultures them. You have to start the organics somewhere and one way to do that is with a *few* fish. You don't want to load the tank up with fish at the start but a few are okay, even good. You *do* want to load up with plants to absorb the nitrogen and provide lots of oxygen. You *can* even skip the fish altogether (some folks do) but you still have to put in fish food or some other more measured and balanced source of nutrients for the plants. A filter to mechanically control detritus is a good idea in a planted tank but the bacteria in the planted tank (in the gravel, on all the surfaces, will probably be enough with or without a biofilter -- provided you keep your plants fed and don't go crazy and overfeed the plants or your fish. If you don't put in a filter, then you should at least have a powerhead or other pump to ensure some circulation -- I did forget that, didn't I? You don't have to add any CO2. You can grow a very nice planted tank without adding any CO2. Plants will not grow as fast and you won't need as much lighting (and that ain't necessarily bad, is it?) but lots of plants will do just fine without added CO2. Try something hardy like the Amazon Sword (aka Echinodorus Bleheri) and water sprite and java fern. There's lots of others but those are often easy to find and you can grow them without added CO2 Otoh, if you want to move away from simple, there is no end tohow complex you can go. But you can keep things simple and have a very nice planted tank. And if you have any artistic talent (which I don't), you can make a lovely aquascape with a simple tank.
