I'm not sure, but you may have missed my point.  The point was simply that if 
you run your tank out of *any* essential nutrient then you will have sickly 
plants.  That includes phosphorus.  That includes potassium.

regarding borax:

I doubt it.  But then I don't recommend bleaching things, either.
